Witnessing history – so privileged to be hearing the universal outpourings of grief for and tributes to the critical legacy, defiance, refuge, and compassion of icon in her own right – UMama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Her last public appearance was a few weeks ago with President Ramaphosa for lunch at a new restaurant near her home inspired by her and a voter registration drive in preparation for the 2019 general elections. She went to church on Good Friday and last week at another event she refused a wheelchair. Her house in Soweto (she refused to move to a more upscale neighbourhood) is right now surrounded by throngs singing liberation songs. President Ramaphosa now speaking about her as an uniter – of races, generations, rural/urban, Continent/ Diaspora and the global anti-apartheid movement. National Funeral to be on April 14th plus Memorial Service on the 11th plus many regional memorials.
