Building Minds, Forging Bridges: Teaching in a Visually Littered World
Arianne Jennifer Rourke and Vaughan Rees (eds)

The 21st century learner is faced with an avalanche of visual imagery in the media and on the World Wide Web that enhances as well as distracts from learning. The 21st century educator in higher education needs to understand how to embrace visual culture and digital imagery to accelerate and deepen learning. This book provides a theoretical as well as practical basis for utilising visual imagery in teaching to build minds and forge bridges between the classroom and the learner’s real world experiences. Through an understanding of visual literacy, visual memory, colour theory, visual autobiography, the role of narrative and metaphor, semantic cues and prototypical examples, this book will explore how best to utilise visual imagery to promote meaningful active learning. It will also discuss how mobile eye tracking technology, mind maps and concept cartoons can be used to stimulate learning and promote critical independent thinking.

Crowdsourcing Peer-to-Peer Assessment in MOOCs

Student assessment occupies much of the space within educational policy and learning philosophy discussions these days. The issue poses a particularly tough challenge for the various massive open online course (MOOC) initiatives. The major platforms are expanding into course areas where check-the-box, right and wrong answers don’t provide meaningful feedback. Now the search is on for appropriate platforms that allow for effective responses and ratings for student work. Anne Margulies of Harvard University & edX said recently that assessment models for non-technical courses are, “probably the hottest topic on campus right now.”

The issue isn’t limited to humanities courses either…Read more on Scholar.

New Book Published

The Principles of Learning and Teaching
By Adel Al-Bataineh

This primer is intended to provide teachers with the foundational knowledge to understand student learning, develop the necessary skills to plan curriculum and instructional strategies, and enrich teachers’ abilities to assess and manage their classrooms. Each chapter includes a summary, a list of key terms, people and ideas, and discussion questions. Through these resources, the readers are encouraged to discuss, analyze and debate issues that relate to learning and teaching. A teacher’s success depends, to a large degree, on the success of his or her students. To help students succeed, teachers must not only develop a range of pedagogical skills, they must also develop the personal characteristics conducive to effective teaching. The author hopes that that this book will contribute to the advancement of good teaching.

This book is now available in our online bookstore.
