Life Rattle Radio Update #35

Hello Life Rattle listeners,

This Sunday, November 13, at 9 p.m., we present a new podcast with stories by two Life Rattle writers:

Vic Gaysheyongai and Donna Kakonge

“Buckeroo Bez and the Escape from the City of Lost Cause,” by Gaysheyongai, and “Superwomon,” by Kakonge, share more than a reference to the fantastic; they also share hopeful determination.

Both writers’ masterful use of subtle detail creates a dull, uncertain “here and nows” full of quiet desperation. In these bleak settings, we meet central characters who display incredible optimism and humour, and a degree of naive innocence, in their quest for a brighter future, with love and security and an ideal home.

Visit the Life Rattle website, this Sunday at 9, for stories you won’t hear anywhere else.

Expressive Writing: Rhetorical Analysis of The Calculus Test

The main character in this story shows that he has a supportive home life with the relationship with his mother. Although his mother does not like all of his books all over the kitchen table while he is studying, she wishes him good luck on his calculus test.

Unfortunately, it turns out the good luck does not serve the main character well. He receives a test that is difficult to do and his friend sitting beside him during the test already knows that he has failed miserably.

This story works because before the results are in for the test, you already know what the outcome will be for the main character and his friends on the calculus test. Sometimes trying hard does not always pay off.

Expressive Writing: EX. 13: Bath Time Analysis

“Bath Time” is a story that appeals to the emotions, to the mind, as well as to the senses.

The author inserts her voice in a subtle way by pointing out the difficult day the mother (narrator) has had with school and with the bank. The author seems to disappear for a while in the exchange between the narrator (mother) and her child.
The narrator is having a hard day giving her daughter a bath. The narrator is at her most powerful in the garbage chute where she is struggling with her emotions in putrid air. Prior to this, the author takes over for a while to give the narrator a break as she writes about the narrator’s life of freedom before having her daughter. The author has the final say at the end where although the narrator has resolved things with her daughter, it is only for today the author reminds us.

The interplay between the author and the narrator adds to two heads are better than one approach to telling the story.

The author’s attitude towards the narrator seems to be one of sympathy and understanding. The author seems to understand and know the difficulties of being a mother.

The magic of Mom and Dad by Edyta Piascyk is that the bouquet of roses that the Dad gives to the Mom says so much. This couple, divorced for five years, probably got divorced because the Mom did not pay attention to the Dad. The Dad obviously seems to still love his former wife, who is too busy trying to keep house and home and appearances up for the family.

Those red roses with white baby breathe the father gives his former wife say so much.

MImage result for Diamondsagic of Diamond Heights from Bare Essentials

The magic of Diamond Heights is that there was a lot of action in it. Although nothing much happens, there is a lot of movement as the granddaughter helps her grandmother. This helps to create a visual image of their interactions. It also helps the reader to bond with the characters.
