OPG warns people to use extra caution near Ontario’s waterways

TORONTO, Dec. 23, 2011, /CNW/ – The warm weather in many parts of the province might delay the start of traditional winter activities, but it is still a good time to think about basic safety tips, especially near the water.

John Murphy, OPG’s Executive Vice President – Hydro says: “By making safety a priority no matter where you are this festive season, you can help make sure your holiday is a happy and safe one.” He added people going near hydro dams or stations should obey all signs, fences and other barriers.

Murphy noted that rain, freezing rain, and snow on the banks along waterways can make them even more treacherous and slippery than usual.

Water levels and flows near hydro stations, and even further downstream, can change quickly and often without notice, Murphy said.

“Ice near dams or hydroelectric stations can be thinner and less consistent than ice in other locations. Our message is simple. Stay clear, stay safe. Enjoy the winter, but whatever you like to do please don’t do it near hydro facilities.” he said.
