DULUX Colours of the Year

2020 Colour of the Year – Chinese Porcelain (DLX1160-6).

Deep blue skies ahead in home decor: DULUX Paints by PPG unveils inky cobalt as 2020 paint Colour of the Year

Complimentary warm teak named brand’s first stain Colour of the Year

TORONTO, August 15, 2019 – In today’s fast-paced, data-driven world where stress and anxiety are all too common, people can find refuge from their blues by surrounding themselves with, well, blue. Not just any blue, though – think deep, comforting, inky cobalt blue.

That’s the message of trend forecasters at DULUX® Paints by PPG in unveiling the brand’s 2020 Colour of the Year – Chinese Porcelain (DLX1160-6). This rich and traditional hue combines the energy and brightness of cobalt blue with a muted, dark navy tone, emitting a feeling of calm, restfulness and hope.

“Everyone today is looking for an escape from technology, a way to slow down and infuse simplicity into their lives in an uplifting environment. This is, in part, why we’re craving blues like Chinese Porcelain,” said Rob McDonald, Senior Brand Manager, Dulux Paints by PPG. “Exuding depth, richness, and drama, next year’s blue brings us closer to natural elements such as the sea and sky – creating lavish serenity in any space.”

According to McDonald, the trending earth-tone aesthetic will be reflected in all facets of home decor in the coming year, highlighted by uncluttered spaces with organic, deep mineral and metallic tones that delight the senses.

“The colour palette shifts away from the cool, stark greys of the past and builds on last year’s introduction of warm shades that emit an air of old-world charm and craftsmanship, blending together classical and modern design elements to create sophisticated looks,” said McDonald.

With natural materials such as wood and rattan dominating this design movement, Dulux Paints by PPG has, for the first time, also announced a stunning Colour of the Year for 2020 – Teak, a warm, semi-transparent medium-brown stain that has a 1970s retro vibe with a richness that fits today’s world. An ideal complement to Chinese Porcelain and part of the Dulux Professional Wood Finishes line, Teak has a raw, organic feel that brings out the best of inky cobalt blue, whether used for a home’s interior or exterior.

. Chinese Porcelain and Teak are deep mineral tones such as Dulux Paints’ Gracious Glow (DLX1116-5) yellow-olive green, Talavera (DLX1018-5) warm taupe, Brown Clay (DLX1199-6) soft terracotta and Gray Marble (DLX1002-4) stone gray

Other complementary trending colours that pair well with both Chinese Porcelain and Teak are deep mineral tones such as Dulux Paints’ Gracious Glow (DLX1116-5) yellow-olive green, Talavera (DLX1018-5) warm taupe, Brown Clay (DLX1199-6) soft terracotta and Gray Marble (DLX1002-4) stone gray. The combination of these nod-to-nature hues delivers an ambiance of state-of-the-art luxury in its simplest form, particularly when accessorized with warm metal accents and linear geometric patterns.

To incorporate this blue into any home, Dulux Paints by PPG offers these tips:

·         Paint an accent wall with Chinese Porcelain as a perfect backdrop for vivacious colours to pop.

·         Use blue as a feature colour in a bedroom with crisp white bedding and crown molding to provide a sharp contrast.

·         In a living room, layer inky cobalt blue with additional blues in tufted and velvet furniture or pair with trending metallic finishes to create an elegant living space.

·         Complement the hue with decors such as lush drapes or velvet pillows in warm saffron and turmeric tones.

·         In addition to warm teak wood, pair deep blue with leather accents and dusty sand tones for an attention-grabbing look.

“Incorporating even a splash of Chinese Porcelain into your home will not only help brighten the space, but it also will go a long way in infusing a room with the calm and tranquility that everybody is after,” McDonald said.

Hot Colours for Summer

DULUX paint unveils palette rooted in the garden

TORONTO, June 23, 2014 – “Garden fresh” is taking on a whole new meaning this summer. Once associated with the culinary world, the concept has branched into home décor, infusing outdoor freshness into living spaces.

That’s the message of leading brand DULUX® paint in unveiling its summer 2014 colour palette. According to the DULUX brand, this season’s hottest hues – becoming firmly planted in all areas of the home – including floral pastels, bright reds, yellows and oranges, and field greens.

“After a long, cold winter, warm garden-like colours are quickly gaining popularity on Canadian walls as well as in furniture and accessories,” said Martin Tustin-Fuchs, brand manager for DULUX paint. “The trend moves consumers away from the comfort zone of whites and beiges towards brighter tones that emit a feeling of renewed energy and help lift spirits.”

Topping the list of summer favourites by DULUX paint are tomato reds such as Tender Rose (10YR 16/407), spicy oranges such as Pagoda (60YR 36/468), pastel yellows such as May Yellow (50YY 75/254), and meadow greens such as Potpourri Green (50GY 66/111).

Explaining that paint is the easiest and least expensive way to bring summer’s warm colours into the home, Tustin-Fuchs suggested choosing the main colour for a room and then adding other hues in unequal amounts. “A good rule of thumb is to use the dominant tone in about two-thirds of the room and the other colours in lessening quantities,” he said. “For example, if you select a soft green as the dominant colour, you may want to paint your trim, doors, and ceilings in varying shades of that green or another colour of the same concentration.”

When painting more than one room, Tustin-Fuchs said he recommends planning your entire colour scheme before starting the job. “Paste paint chips of the colours you’ve chosen for each room on a piece of white cardboard to make sure they work well together, and adjust your choices accordingly, keeping in mind that the shades will be much more intense on a large wall.”

To make the paint selection process easier, DULUX paint has introduced several online tools that help take the guesswork out of choosing colours, he explained. The DULUX paint colour visualizer, for example, accessible at http://www.dulux.ca, enables users to virtually paint sample rooms or their own uploaded photos and explore different colour combinations before picking up a paintbrush. Visitors to the website can also upload photos of their favourite sites or vacation hotspots, and the DULUX paint software will automatically help them recreate the feeling of the image in a room by suggesting a paint palette based on the colours in the particular photo.

“A change of wall colour can freshen up a room like no other decorating tool,” Tustin-Fuchs said. “Particularly, this summer’s colours will help bring the beauty of the outdoors inside and keep your home feeling warm even once winter rolls around again.”

TORONTO, March 6, 2014 – Sending your kids to their rooms for a timeout may take on a whole new meaning after a paint renovation. If the walls sport the right colours, a child may just want to stay there.

Exterior Painting Tips from Dulux Paints

Dulux Diamond Exterior Satin is a premium acrylic paint that features early shower resistance, providing homeowners with protection against losing a day’s paint job if it starts to rain.

Dulux Diamond Exterior Satin

With the launch of Dulux Diamond Exterior Satin, a breakthrough paint that resists early showers, Dulux Paints offers these tips to ensure a successful outdoor painting project every time.

Prepare for the best: With harsh winters taking a toll on Canadian homes, leaving painted surfaces peeling and blistering, surface preparation is the most important part of the exterior painting. For the longest-lasting results, clean the area thoroughly with a phosphate-free cleaning solution, and then rinse with a garden hose or pressure washer. Scrub with a brush to remove any dirt and grime, and use a scraper, putty knife or wire brush to loosen debris from deteriorating surfaces. Fill holes and cracks with acrylic‑based caulking and smooth surfaces with 120 grit sandpaper.

Take it stroke by stroke: Always make a plan or timetable for your job. It’s best to work from the top down, starting with fascia boards, gutters, and eavestroughs, and then moving on to walls and downspouts, leaving the trim for last. If painting boards or siding, focus on one or two boards at a time, going from one end to the other – rather than working in sections – to avoid overlapping. Begin painting on the side of your house that remains in the shade the longest since painting in direct sunlight can cause blisters and lap marks.

Choose tools wisely: When it comes to selecting a brush, a four-inch straight-edged brush is best for broad surfaces like siding, while a two-inch brush is suggested for trim. Rollers work well on porous surfaces such as masonry or stucco and are also useful for covering flat surfaces. When painting large areas, try using a spray gun instead for a uniform, professional finish. Products such as the Graco TrueCoat Pro sprayer, available at Dulux Paints stores nationally, can complete a paint project in half the time of a brush or roller.

Know that less is more: While priming the surface to be painted is a good idea when it comes to painting, never overdo it. There’s a limit to the number of coats a surface can support. As paint ages and thickens over time, it loses its flexibility and ability to expand and contract, causing premature cracking or flaking. For long-lasting results, apply a maximum of two even coats of paint to achieve the desired colour appearance and surface protection. Never paint wood when it is wet as the new paint will rapidly blister and flake off.

Open your door to colour: The front door is one of the most important features of any home, so you can instantly brighten up your property by painting it a more vibrant colour. A freshly-painted front door will also help block the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays. When painting the trim, wedge the door open as you work. Begin with the jamb and stop, starting at the top on the inside corner and working your way down. While the jambs are still wet, paint the casings, being sure to mask the outside edges. Paint the threshold only after the jambs and casings have dried.

Dulux to Invest $1 Million Worth of Paint in Communities across Canada in Effort to Add Colour to People’s Lives

Dulux Paints Store

Initiative coincides with rebranding of ICI Paints, Glidden, Color Your World

and Betonel stores under one common Dulux Paints banner

June 6, 2011 – Communities across Canada will be infused with a little more colour, thanks to a $1 million investment in paint announced today by industry leader Dulux Paints.

The Dulux paint – to be used to bring colour to people’s lives from coast to coast – will beautify public structures as well as the buildings of community, charity and non-profit organizations, as selected by each local region.

Called the Dulux Adding Colour to People’s Lives program, the initiative coincides with the launch of 230 new Dulux Paints banner stores across Canada, each of which will receive a share of the $1 million paint investment for use in their communities. The stores, previously operated as ICI Paints, Glidden and Color Your World outlets, will now rebrand under one common banner and take on the Dulux Paints name. The company’s Betonel stores will become Betonel Dulux outlets.

“All that is changing is the name of our retail outlets and the labels on our paint cans – the store staff and operations, and high quality of our products, will remain the same,” said Vince Rea, Senior Vice-President of Dulux Paints Stores.

“While the ICI Paints, Glidden, and Color Your World store banners will cease to exist, Glidden remains an important paint brand for the new Dulux Paints stores and will be sold along with the Dulux brand,” Rea explained. “The stores will continue to provide the same high-quality paint and excellent service that we have been delivering for decades.”

The investment – the equivalent of about 20,000 gallons of paint, which is enough to cover about 8,000,000 square feet – is part of a worldwide initiative by Dulux to add colour to people’s lives, Rea explained.

Dulux Painting Event 2

“As one of the world’s largest paint brands, Dulux is passionate about inspiring people to use paint to bring more colour and vibrancy to their lives,” he said. “Through the simple act of dipping a brush into a paint can and applying a splash of colour to a grey wall, we are rejuvenating neighbourhoods around the globe, from North and South America to Europe and Asia.”

Each new Dulux banner store will make use of the paint investment by independently selecting a public structure or local organization to support, and – with the help of the community, including local designers and dignitaries – will hold neighbourhood painting events to transform a grey and tired spaces.

“By reviving communities and demonstrating what can be done with colour, Dulux hopes to inspire Canadians to reinvent the familiar and transform not only their public spaces but also their personal spaces, with shades that make them feel good,” Rea said. “We encourage everyone to look out for a splash of colour coming to a neighbourhood near you, and to join our movement to add colour to people’s lives.”

Speaking from first-hand experience, Rea emphasized that participants will come away with a tremendous feeling of self-satisfaction by helping out with these community painting projects. “I was recently part of a group that repainted a youth drop-in centre, and there are no words to describe the sense of fulfillment we all experienced when we saw the positive effect we had on the facility and the difference we helped to make in the lives of the people using it,” he said. “The heartfelt thanks and appreciation expressed by both the facility directors and the youth said it all – this is the essence of the Dulux program.”

For more information about painting events in your community, and how you can get involved, visit http://www.addingcolour.ca or call 1-800-387-3663.
