Jennifer Winters - August 21, 2010

As summer is here fewer clothes are being worn in public.

I am all about “feeling comfortable in your own skin” however I do not need to see everyone’s bits hanging out? Yes, it is hot, but there are clothes that are suitable to wear when the weather is hot. I am the last person to know anything in fashion as I feel like I should have a membership to Wal-Mart and Winners. Places like those still have tasteful articles of clothing. I was driving around with my sister yesterday stopped in traffic as a younger lady was crossing the street, both of our eyes did the “gaze”, her shirt was really short, shorts looked like a scarf, and she had the gladiator shoes on. Sadly being judgmental with a response “what was that?” We had a good laugh even though it was at her expense, it wasn’t so much the fashion I had a problem with, but it was the self-image that I had questioned.

I usually wear what fits and what is comfortable, but for the life of me, I cannot see how thong like buckled up shoes, shorts that no longer look like shorts, and belly hanging out make someone feel good. Then my mind went “well maybe she doesn’t, which is why she is doing it”. The judgmental me turned very quickly to how society views people from the outside looking in. This is coming from someone who wears her crocks proud outside, and I get mocked for it daily, and my response is always “I don’t care about the style, they are comfortable”. Which I will stick by through and through if it is comfortable and you feel good to do it. However that girl, she did it I guess, if she wanted the attention and got people thinking about it well she sure did. I guess I am confused on why we just dress to impress everybody and want to scream out “look at me please”. I realize this is a touchy subject for some, and this is not to second-guess what you are wearing or what will people think because it shouldn’t matter what other people think.

I suspect in a way we are all seeking a little attention just to be noticed to know we aren’t really walking this road alone, even though we will have are books buried in our faces, music cranked up so loud we can’t even here the trucks honking. My favorite part of the year us beach season where the bathing suits (lack of bathing suits) come out. There are certain people in this world that should not be wearing “mankinis.” I still go with the saying “flaunt it and be proud” but we don’t need to exhibit everything. This is just my opinion, not a fact. The truth of the matter is as much as we want to be left alone; I can see the appeal for wanting to get noticed.
