Liz Sandals, Minister of Education, issued the following statement today about capital planning in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB):”I would like to thank the special assistance team – Bill Hogarth and Ralph Benson – for working with the TDSB to help them address capital and operating challenges.
Together, they have made significant progress in developing a strategic approach to capital planning that is consistent with the Ministry of Education’s priorities. As a result, we are lifting the freeze on capital funding for the board. This will allow the TDSB to once again develop and submit capital project proposals and business cases to the ministry, which will be considered alongside capital proposals from school boards across the province.
While the TDSB has benefited from the advice of the special assistance team and recently approved a balanced operating and capital budget for 2013-14 and a three-year capital plan, the team’s report makes it clear that there is much more work to do. For example, the board has not yet moved forward on numerous cost-saving recommendations from the PricewaterhouseCoopers report that was completed last November. It is vital that the TDSB build on the good work they have done with the special assistance team and continue to seek further opportunities for improvement.
Once again, I thank Mr. Hogarth and Mr. Benson for their dedication, hard work and assistance. Our government remains committed to working with the TDSB toward our shared goals of ensuring sound financial management and providing our students with the best possible education.”
