TPS launches new Core Values and Competencies

Friday, January 19, 2018 – 1:07 PM
Strategy Management
416-808-7018

The TPS has launched its new Core Values and Competency Framework that represent the principles and behaviours that members of the Service and the communities believe are reflective of a modern, community-centric police service. The public launch took place at the Police Services Board meeting which provided an opportunity to share the new values and the framework with the Board, the public, and members.

The Toronto Police Service’s new Core Values and Competency Framework were developed through a collaborative and inclusive process including interviews with almost 200 Service members, uniform and civilian, from all ranks, and another 100 people from community advocates to members of Community Police Liaison Committees.

There are four new Core Values: Service at our Core, Do the right thing, Connect with Compassion and Reflect & Grow.

“These are the foundational behaviours that tell us who we employ, what behaviours we need to develop, the behaviours that will be recognized and rewarded, and the behaviours necessary for promotion and greater responsibly within our ranks and leadership,” commented Chief Mark Saunders. “I would like to thank everyone – members and the community – for their help in this important process.”

The new Competency Framework was created to help guide the implementation of the People Plan – the three-year plan that provides a roadmap to improve how the Service hires develops promotes and preserves the well-being of its members.

About the Action Plan: The Way Forward
Mandated to look beyond the way policing is currently done in Toronto, the Transformational Task Force (TTF) proposed a modernized policing model for the city that is innovative, sustainable, and affordable. The model will place communities at its core, be intelligence-led, optimize the use of resources and technology, and embrace partnerships as a means of enhancing capacity and capability. The final report contains 32 recommendations and was accepted by the Toronto Police Services Board in February 2017 as the Service’s Business Plan for the next three years.

Last Day to Help JHR Give Youth A Voice!

 Leslie Spence
Dear Donna Kakonge,
Today is the last day of JHR’s groundbreaking Give Youth A Voice campaign – six weeks of raising awareness and taking action to help youth world wide.
To date, we have raised $20,077.76, surpassing our goal of $15,000!
We thank all of you who have acted to make this Holiday campaign a success through your enormous generosity and support. And there is still time to make JHR your charity of choice in 2018. Help us help youth find their voice and vocation – world wide. Support the campaign with a last-minute gift, or become a monthly donor through 2018 here.
If you have not yet read all the stories of how your support can help change young people’s lives, click the links below!
We started by sharing the story of Leslie Spence who set up a youth radio station in Webequie First Nation and Emilee Gilpin who found a job after her JHR internship.
We shared how young Syrian journalists are working with JHR to get news out to the Syrian people, as reported by CTV News,
We recognized Jordanian journalist Nour Ezz Addin for her powerful and courageous reporting on torture.
And we both supported and celebrated young media entrepreneurs in South Africa, for their work coming up with bright new ideas to reach out to young people across South Africa.
These brave young journalists strengthen our work and the casue of strong media world wide.
Follow us on social media @jhrnews for further news on how we continue to Give Youth A Voice!
Thank you again for your support. Without you, none of this would be possible.
Sincerely,
Rachel Pulfer
Executive Director, Journalists for Human Rights

our support allows us to continue our innovative work around the world!

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS ( 15th JAN – 21st JAN )

In Writing (all kinds) on January 15, 2018 at 3:00 AM

Aries ( 21 March–19 April ) – There is a strong focus on your life direction and career this week. You could be mulling over some major decisions about where you’re headed. Collaborating with others helps build your faith and optimism. You’re in a better position to see the benefits of partnering going forward, or there could be more helpful, happy, or pleasing people coming into your life. You do find yourself more willing to take on responsibilities with your loved ones. You’ll do what needs to be done in your relationships, but they aren’t a huge priority for you right now. Favorable Dates: Jan 16 Favorable Colors: Red & Blue

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May ) – This is a good time for you to assess your life, take stock of what you’ve done, and focus on what you should be focused on. You can see the work you’ve put in and decisions you’ve made come to the point where you’re rewarded for being smart and responsible or punished for not. You can be much more emotional, and you can be more outward with your emotions. You want a closer connection to the people you’re closest to and want to get to their inner core as well. Intimacy becomes more important for you. Favorable Dates: Jan 21 Favorable Colors: Red & Blue

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June ) – The week is a strong one for making important adjustments, getting your daily routines and self-care problems into order, and doing editing or revision in your work. Attempting to push ahead new initiatives is not advised for now. There can be an increase in your personal influence in groups, with friends, and with a partner. You might especially enjoy coming to someone’s aid. This can be a time for rediscovering old passions. You’ll have plenty of time for sorting out your desires, needs, and goals for this week. Favorable Dates: Jan 20 Favorable Colors: Red & Purple

Cancer  ( 21 June – 22 July ) – This is an excellent time for researching, editing, or otherwise going over a business, health, and financial matters. You are likely to feel especially motivated to do things that you’ve been letting slide. Brand-new endeavours may not get off the ground, but work in progress can benefit greatly from your attention now. You can also focus on a spiritual venture, and improve your connection to your intuition.  In general, you feel more optimistic about life, and you try to focus on the good, even when you’re upset. Favorable Dates: Jan 17 Favorable Colors: Red & Blue

Leo  ( 23 July – 22 August ) – You would be drawn to your inner world this week, and to making inner changes that have a strong impact on your life. You are tuned in to the deeper issues and looking beyond the surface of matters for answers. Subconscious issues can become more obvious to you, and working on them is a good thing. That can be a great time for therapy or for focusing on your spiritual self. Your intuition can be incredibly good, so listen to what your gut is trying to say to you. Favorable Dates: Jan 20 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Blue

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September ) – This period involves coming to a greater understanding of how the way you manage your resources impacts your confidence. Money and security matters require some revising and reorganizing. You want close and strong emotional bonds with the people in your life right now, and you won’t settle for anything less than that. For singles, intimate relationships or increased need for privacy or exclusiveness can be impacting friendships and goals, and this is the time for cutting back, simplifying, and coming to a better position. Favorable Dates: Jan 18 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Blue

Libra  ( 23 September – 22 October ) –Your ambitions are building, and attention to practical matters pays off. It’s a good time to think in big terms and seize career opportunities as they arise. You are exploring different ways of building your sense of value and worthiness. Money issues or sources of income may change and there can be some reshuffling to do. Ultimately, you could be finding ways to increase your income or your earning potential. Opportunities for cooperation, loving and personal gestures, and shared happiness emerge in this week. Favorable Dates: Jan 15 Favorable Colors: Red & White

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November ) – You could be re-assessing the ways in which you approach relationships, as well as what it is you want from your connections. Looking to the past in order to improve the present and your future is what this is about.  You are especially open to new insights, and you might lend a sensitive ear to other people’s problems. You could feel especially reinforced and uplifted when you discover someone who truly understands your perspective. A sense of inner joy and peace can be with you, which effectively boosts your personal magnetism. Favorable Dates: Jan 19 Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow

Sagittarius ( 22 November – 21 December ) – This week brings stronger attention to money matters, personal possessions, and issues of comfort and security. You’re likely to feel in a stronger position in terms of outlook and knowledge. Events occurring now tend to point you in the direction of a more simplified, streamlined, and improved way of life. This is a good time for exploring new adventures or perspectives with a partner and people you care about. Romantic possibilities may come from a person who is of a very different background than you. Favorable Dates: Jan 17 Favorable Colors: Red & White

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January ) – This period ushers in good energy for recommitting to plans and projects, as well as for new resolutions to explore, grow, and expand beyond the regular experiences of your life. You would improve your lifestyle dramatically to make you a much healthier, happier person, and you can streamline your daily life and routine so that you’re more productive, efficient, and accomplish more. During the weekend, the need for some privacy and downtime is natural as you prepare for more outgoing and visible times. Favorable Dates: Jan 20 Favorable Colors: Red & White

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February ) – You feel you have good energy on your side pushing you to your best. You’re finally coming out of the shadows and into the light, and you’re ready to take the plans you’ve been working on for some time and make them a reality. You can have more mental stimulation, come up with more ideas, and find it hard to keep anything to yourself  The week pulls your attention to happiness goals, friendships, and networking and bringing more joy and pleasure in reaching out and making connections. You can be more spiritual, intuitive, and tuned in to the subtle energies around you.Favorable Dates: Jan 15 Favorable Colors: Red & Grey

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March ) – You might enjoy recognition for past work, and you can quite effectively work on or revive old projects that are likely to have long-term appeal and profitability. You can renew your connection to your values, improve your sense of security, and be more in touch with your senses. You can be more invested in your beliefs, and defend them against anyone who you feel threatens them. If single, you can meet someone new who you’re really interested in and connect with, and if in a relationship, you can make it fun again and inject new life into it. Favorable Dates: Jan 21 Favorable Colors: Blue & White

Public invited to provide input on TPS organizational culture

Friday, January 12, 2018 – 4:31 PM
Strategy Management
416-808-7018

The Toronto Police Service is modernizing its policing model. Part of that effort includes assessing the Service’s organizational culture – the values, beliefs, and behaviours that shape how Toronto Police Service members do their work and interact with the community.

“As we modernize, we are talking to our members about what they think we, as a Service, do well and where we can improve. It’s also important for us to continue the conversation with the community that helped inform the creation of our Action Plan: The Way Forward. We are inviting the public to share their views either by attending roundtable discussions or filling out an online survey so we can get their input during this assessment process,” explained Deputy Chief Barbara McLean.

The Service has hired MNP, a Canadian professional services firm, to complete the organizational culture assessment. An important part of the assessment is offering the opportunity for community members across the city to provide their input, either in person or by a survey.

The public will be able to provide input via an online survey available at the following link: Organizational Culture Survey or participate in a facilitated roundtable that will be held in various locations across Toronto.

About the roundtables:

Roundtable sessions will be held in the evenings at the following locations:

CAMH entrusted with $100 million donation

In Writing (all kinds) on January 11, 2018 at 6:11 PM

Your dedication to mental health has sparked unprecedented hope!

Dear Donna,

When I joined the CAMH Foundation nine years ago as President and CEO, I always hoped to celebrate a day like today with you — you helped make it a reality.

Today is a turning point.

Today we announced that CAMH has been entrusted with Canada’s very first $100 million donation dedicated to finding the causes and cures of mental illness.

It’s an anonymous gift, given in the spirit of public service and intended to fuel the discovery that will save lives and create social change for all Canadians.

This donation will enable CAMH to attract talent, explore big ideas, support young scientists and leverage data to unlock the mysteries of the brain.

By partnering with CAMH, you are helping people living with mental illness know that there is hope, and change is coming.

Watch this inspirational video of young CAMH researchers and scientists as they talk about their hope for the future of mental illness.

This day would not be possible without the ongoing support of people like you. Every donation has helped build CAMH into Canada’s largest mental health academic health science centre, attracting world-class talent, research facilities and once-in-a-lifetime investments like this one.

I’ve never felt more hopeful than I do at this moment. Thank you for your generosity and commitment.

This is only the beginning.

P.S. There’s reason to hope — watch this powerful video about the discoveries that are waiting to be uncovered. You can also watch the announcement recorded live on our Facebook page.

P.P.S. The news of this annoucement is spreading — here are a few reactions from CAMH supporters from across Canada:

La peinture CIL® offre des conseils faciles et économiques

pour embellir les espaces de vie en plein air

CIL Outdoor Living Photo -- 2

CIL Outdoor Living Photo -- 1

Black and Educated? Unveiling The Contradictions and Redesigning The Future
Delivered by Chizoba Imoka and moderated by Dr. Kofi Hope as apart of Hart Houses Hancock Lecture

In an education system based on Western values and knowledge, Black students go through school feeling alienated and graduate ill-equipped to bring about transformative changes in their communities. Is it not time to restructure the system?

Chizoba Imoka disrupts the perceived Black and “Educated” contradiction and advances an alternative vision of education that acknowledges colonial history, is responsive to socio-political concerns and enables a new generation of social justice leaders to make real change.

Following her presentation, Chizoba will be joined by a Rhodes Scholar, Doctor of Philosophy in Politics, community activist and youth advocate, Kofi Hope for an onstage discussion.

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS ( 8th Jan – 14th Jan )

In Writing (all kinds) on January 8, 2018 at 3:00 AM

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April ) – There is an inherent impatience with getting what you want this week. You would live in the moment and have a hard time waiting for things to happen. Whims of the moment take absolute precedence in your lives. You may decide to study or increase the dimension of your knowledge as you move from one level of wisdom to the next. Some of you may step back from a path, withdrawing to contemplate your situation or choosing a new area or discipline of knowledge to expand the inner horizon. Favorable Dates: Jan 10 Favorable Colors: Grey & Purple

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May ) – You can see more opportunities to expand your life in new ways, and do things you weren’t sure you could do. You would be into the spotlight and want the whole world to see what you’ve been up to and give you credit or praise for it. Opportunity through study, friends, and gatherings of like-minded people can set you on a new path with speed. You would have the power to you and your beloved to renew your fires by affirming your shared course for what you really want. This is a stellar time for making a transition in love. Favorable Dates: Jan 9 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Blue

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June ) – Life takes a turn for the better this week, in almost every aspect of your life. You will have an earnest desire to be recognized as a strong figure of unquestioned achievement and authority. You will want to be known as the dominant force, the leader and the ‘expert’. You can be a bit of a perfectionist and demand the best of yourself, so you do need to not be so hard on yourself. You may come across as more practical, hard-working, and anxious. Favorable Dates: Jan 8  Favorable Colors: Blue & Yellow

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July ) –. Personal changes run deep as you explore your ambitions and need for control over your life. You may study to advance your beliefs and your knowledge. You may wish to break the shackles of routine existence. You also shine a light on your future and your dreams, and you can make some progress with your future dreams. Career matters continue to bring some level of pressure, as the cosmos are asking you to structure your professional life in such a way that you are more effective in what you do. Favorable Dates: Jan 11 Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow

.Leo  ( 23 July – 22 August )  – You want to be in comfortable environments, with people who will nurture and support you, and you don’t want to try anything new, different, or futuristic. You would prefer traditional and conventional methods. You would be more defensive of your beliefs, and you’ll stand up for them no matter what, but should be more open-minded. If single, you can meet someone through your or their work. If you’re in a relationship, you pay attention to the little things with your partner and are less affectionate but more practical in love. Favorable Dates: Jan 11  Favorable Colors: Red & Green

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September ) – You’re more comfortable going outside of your comfort zone and trying things out that are totally different from what you’d normally do. Your own self-expression, self-actualization and self-realization interests you more than anything else. You’re open to unconventional people, unique ideas, and unusual solutions to problems. This week finds you beginning to focus on a special relationship in earnest; it will either be very romantic and passionate or very combative. Either way, keep your feet on the ground, you may be beyond your depth here. Favorable Dates: Jan 9  Favorable Colors: White & Blue

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October) – You can be presented with a new career opportunity or get promoted, set a new one for yourself, or make a good impression on someone. You feel ambitious and focus on what you can get done and succeed with. If single, you can meet lots of potential mates, and you spend your time dating and flirting, playing coy, and while you could fall in love, it’s the playful kind. If you’re in a relationship, you can try to make it feel like it did when you first met, and fall in love with them all over again. Favorable Dates: Jan 12 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Green

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November ) – Your creative side can take over, and you want to be more artistic. You want to focus on the fun times, spend your time laughing and cracking jokes, and don’t want to take anything too seriously. You’re also more comfortable in the spotlight, and crave more attention from people and choose to see the best in people and situations.  This is a good time to do something that’s mutually beneficial to you and someone else and to deal with other people’s money (debts, loans, taxes, inheritances, joint finances). Favorable Dates: Jan 13 Favorable Colors: Yellow & White

Sagittarius (22 November -21 December) – You want to focus on your career and the goals you have, and you can work carefully, methodically, and create plans for what you want that are realistic and attainable. You’re positive about your career and goals and feel that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Your finances are looking up, and you are feeling more positive and idealistic. Friendships are changing and new friends can bring new opportunities for travel and social experiences.  A soul-mate helps you to make a decision that may be life-altering. Favorable Dates: Jan 14  Favorable Colors: Red & White

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January) – You would have a period of increased financial opportunities. You are likely to get a raise or better paying job, start a second job, turn a hobby into a money-making venture, or find other ways to get more money. The harder you work for it, the more you’ll get. You can also redo your budget and find more wiggle room, and increase your finances that way. You can spend more time with loved ones, and show more affection for them. It is a wonderful time for learning and exchanging visits with siblings and friends.  Favorable Dates: Jan 10  Favorable Colors: Red & Purple

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February) – Your financial focus shifts from outside interests to your own. Money should be improving this week. You would feel most content when you straighten out all the details of everyday life. Most of you would take care of these things happily, although some won’t let on. Rethinking old routines, ideas, or even relationships in favour of new approaches will, inevitably, be tense and argumentative and a willingness to consider every angle can make this process work for you. You’re probing the realm of romance and you would be having amazing realizations. Favorable Dates: Jan 12  Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow

Pisces (19 February – 20 March) – You can make your biggest steps forward in your career this week if you pay special attention to opportunities provided by a partner or mate. This can be a good period to take an existing hobby and turn it into something beneficial, especially financially. If single, you can meet someone through a sibling or neighbour, or who lives near you. If in a relationship, you can tell your partner exactly how you feel about them. Whether it is unlikely romance, quirky goals, or life in a caravan – cultivate flexibility and be your lovely self. .Favorable Dates: Jan 13  Favorable Colors: White & Purple
