Rush-hour route enforcement campaign, Monday, July 31, 2017, to Friday, August 4, 2017

Sunday, July 30, 2017 – 4:29 PM
Parking Enforcement
416-808-6600

The enforcement of the city’s rush-hour routes and other traffic and parking offenses continues to be a priority for the Toronto Police Service.

The TPS will be launching a heightened rush-hour route enforcement campaign with a focus on traffic congestion and gridlock within the downtown core. There will be zero tolerance for vehicles found blocking and congesting rush-hour routes.

The campaign will start on Monday, July 31, 2017, with the enforcement of the morning rush-hour routes and will conclude on Friday, August 4, 2017. Parking Enforcement Officers and officers from Traffic Services will be saturating the downtown core to tackle gridlock by ticketing and towing vehicles obstructing rush-hour routes.

Since January 1, 2017, TPS Parking Enforcement has issued 46,370 parking infractions and towed 9,637 vehicles from the city’s rush-hour routes.

Members of the media are welcome to participate in ride-a-longs with members from Parking Enforcement. To arrange a ride-along, please call Brian Moniz at 416-808-1612.

The TPS will be utilizing its Twitter account (@TorontoPolice) to highlight results of this campaign.

For immediate release

In Writing (all kinds) on July 27, 2017 at 3:08 PM

It seems that unprovoked attacks are becoming the norm – so that once again Black Mothers fear for their son’s lives.

A young black man -Defonte Miller-out with his friends was beaten viciously and severely injured by two white adults. The attack raises the spectre of behaviours that most of us thought were confined to the US South prior to the Selma marches.

Young Defonte Miller is lucky to have escaped with his life. But what a life it will now become, for it is forever scarred by the brutality of an off-duty cop and his civilian brother. It is a horrendous situation for his entire family.

It is absolutely despicable that young people of colour are being harassed, intimidated and brutalized by those who are charged with ensuring public safety and security.

How can Black youth have confidence in the police? Defonte it appears was doing nothing wrong (all charges have been dropped against him).

What message does this send to Black youth who may need the protection of the law if the law is applied selectively or used against them? What message does it send to the families of Black youth and indeed to all people of colour who may seek the protection of the justice system in Ontario?

The UARR urges the Government to move swiftly to ensure that an incident of this kind never happens again. The Premier and the Minister for Community Safety must act decisively to bring justice to Defonte and his family to restore the public’s confidence in our justice system. The Mayor’s of Toronto and Whitby and their respective councils must respond immediately.

And now more than ever, they should demonstrate their support for this young Black man and his family.

News Release

Statement by Chief Mark Saunders

Thursday, July 27, 2017 – 2:29 PM
Corporate Communications
416-808-7100

I want to address the events of December 28, 2016 and the case of Mr. Dafonte Miller.

As Chief of Police, it is my responsibility to ensure that transparency and trust are at the forefront of everything we do as a Service.

I would like to make the public aware of a few important details regarding who can notify the Special Investigations Unit and when. Durham Regional Police was responsible for notifying the Toronto Police Service because one of my officers was involved in an event.

As per protocol, members of my Professional Standards Unit applied the policy regarding SIU involvement with the facts they had at that time. They made their decision not to contact the SIU based on that information.

Many months later, a very different version of the events of December 28, 2016 has been presented to the SIU which required their involvement.

With the conclusion of the SIU investigation, normally, I would conduct a Section 11 investigation. However, in light the circumstances now before me, I have taken the extra step of reaching out to an independent agency to complete the Section 11 investigation.

Today, I have spoken with the Chief of Police for Waterloo Regional Police Service, and he has agreed to run the Section 11 investigation as to how the case was handled. They will look at the procedures, policies, governance and conduct.

As soon as it is lawfully possible, the report from Waterloo Regional Police Service will be released to the Toronto Police Services Board. As soon as legally possible, that report will then be made public.

Mark Pugash, Corporate Communications, for Chief Mark Saunders

Donna and Her Volkswagen

Photo Courtesy of Carol Fay Clarke

My Volkswagen Golf is the idea of my eldest niece! When she was three years old, she asked me why I did not have a car? So, shortly after, I was heading out with my sister, my eldest niece, my baby niece at the time (they actually still are very young), and we had seen the Smurfs 2 movie. I tried a Mazda first. I found it too shaky. I found the 2011 Volkswagen that I have to be smooth. I leased it first for four years and my father helped me to buy out the lease when the lease was over. I got the personalized license plates about four years ago. I have a child’s seat in the back for my youngest niece for when she is in the car. No, it’s not diesel! Britain has actually started banning diesel vehicles as of today, just as an aside.
