Varda Etienne is now a Host of a Radio Show in Quebec

As she bops and moves looks real pretty and talks a fast game on Canada’s French music station, Musique Plus, Varda Etienne, 27 and a VJ, works on two shows: Bouge (the highest rated show on Musique Plus) and Groove. She does not like music that lacks movement, but, she has other things on her mind.

“What bothers me is how corrupted the world is today,” she says.

Musique Plus’s age group target is 12 to 24. For the shows Varda works on, it’s a bit older. Varda says what really makes the music station a different place to work in – it’s the only TV environment where she doesn’t feel trapped. The atmosphere is really cool and hip.

Etienne says it is hard in her business of glamour TV to find people you can trust.

“The hard thing of being in the business is to find the real ones, the real people who are not just using you and wanting free tickets (to a show).”

Etienne finds it hard to disassociate her from her sex symbol image.
“I’m 27 now, but I’m going to be 30, and 40, and 50…this can’t last forever. I’m sick of old men only after my ass,” she says.

Etienne notes it is also hard for her to find a good black man that shares the same vision as she does. She feels blessed for all she has…but the glamour life can be lonely. In the area of relationships with men, she has been unsuccessful.

The one man in her life, who keeps her sane and helps her persevere, is her 7-year-old son Alexis.

Varda gets paid less than in other places on TV, but she makes more money than many dream of from working three hours a week live, with repeats that put her on-air for 20 hours.

With her more pay and less work attribute, she takes care of her son Alexis. She had him at the age of 20, unplanned, but no accident.

“It’s crazy but I do manage to do everything. Being a Mom is a full-time job. I could never manage to work a 40-hour shift. My goal is to be a full-time Mom. Alexis is the one man who doesn’t make me feel like a star. I don’t have to wear make-up for him or dress-up,” she notes.

Alexis has been her reason for keeping on in the tough competitive world of TV music. The love of her son is her philosophy of life. He balances everything.

“It’s unconditional FREE love, and unconditional on top of that.”

Her contractual love comes from her work environment at Musique Plus.

What has set her apart in success at work was finding someone she believed in, and who believed in her. A great person to always have in her corner – her boss, Moses Znaimer.

Next and foremost, she believed in herself, and maintained the obligation she had to follow her heart.

“I didn’t become Varda. I was always Varda before TV.”
Varda also finds love through music and men.

“Barry White is the only man who brings palm trees and sunshine in your living room when it’s raining outside,” says Varda.

She listens to disco and Teddy Pendergrass too, as well as Creole music from her roots.

For her future, Varda hopes for wisdom.

“It’s a hard thing to achieve but I want to be the best human being I can be, I want to be the best Mom, I want to be happy. I want to sit in my backyard, reading, just happy to be breathing.”
