“Locs and Talk” – Offered at Kakonge Salon

If you are wondering, how could I possibly look different? Well, you do also. A wise and gentle homeopathic doctor told me not too long ago when I went to her to quit smoking cigarettes that the body renews its cells every three months. This is exactly why people who have been once been diagnosed with cancer can have a different diagnosis only months later there are not any cancer cells in the body. This is why people with mental illness can go decades without a remission. This is also why even people who have been diagnosed with diabetes can live to be 100+ years old. Yes, the homeopath is right and each of us is changing every single day, every single moment, every single second. All of us – regardless of age.

Most people’s dreadlocks are actually double the length if the hair was straightened. The reason that dreadlocks gain length slower is that the hair does not grow in a straight line. I tends to grow back and forth randomly so it takes more than 3″ of hair to increase the length of the dread 3″. The thicker the dreads, generally the slower they gain length. But, if your hair is not meant to be straight naturally, I would not recommend straightening it to receive the length. It can also damage the health of your hair.

I used Giovanni Direct Leave-in Conditioner and shampooed with Dr. Bronner’s peppermint shampoo, washed my skin with the citrus one, used Aveeno Intensive Care skin lotion after washing and that was it for about 10 years. Oh yes, I would also use during that time whatever conditioner I could find, but when I was in my 20s, I really loved Aveda products. Before I used the Rosemary Mint Aveda conditioner. The Aveda website also has a 20 percent discount going on recently for Canadian customers. The only reason why I do not use the Aveda conditioner anymore is that it is not recommended for locs. Instead, since my locs are mature, I use a selection of my oils in warmer weather and all of the oils in colder weather to deep condition my locs. My hair oils are featured on this site.

I also recently started pre-conditioning my hair before washes with mayonnaise since Somali, Eritrean and Ethiopian people have sworn by it and told me about it for years. You need to use the natural and/or organic mayonnaise that you can find in a health section of a grocery store or a health food store. The commercial mayonnaise has sugar, where the more organic one has just salt and not sugar. I also try to eat eggs at least three times a week. I have one loc in the back of my head that is past the middle of my back and I am rather tall. Recently, I have noticed about two locs in total that is into the middle of my back.

Loc care really is simple! It need not be complicated. I would say that the most important thing that I used to have for my locs is Dr. Bronner’s shampoo and my oils. Now, I have decided to use Dr. Bronner’s shampoo only if I am finding a lot of build-up in my hair, as well as for cleaning purposes around the home because it is actually an all-purpose shampoo which is why it could appear to be drying on more mature hair.

I keep the hair oils in and help to deep condition my locs with a heating cap when the weather is rather dry. Thank goodness Toronto is humid. I have come to appreciate it for its humidity.

The hair oils are a must for mature loced hair that is of African origin. I have recently started using Herbal Glo Shampoo for Thinning Hair, plus the compatible conditioner. So far, so good. I still pre-condition with the mayonnaise, the oils and put the Giovanni in right after I have shampooed. Sometimes I also use Maui Moisture Coconut as a pre-conditioner as well. Well, often, I do use Maui Moisture to pre-condition my hair. Giovanni leaves too many white marks in black coloured hair if you put it in when your hair is not wet.I walk 31 minutes at least seven days a week and I will be 45 this year. I will be 46 next year and 47 the year after that and so it goes. I also have started to take a plethora of vitamins (a whole bunch of different kinds) again. I have cut this down for financial reasons to omega 3-6-9 plus flaxseed oil and borage oil, a multivitamin for women,  cold-doctor to prevent colds and vitamin D3 all of the Exact brands from Loblaws. I have also just recently within the last two weeks or so cut out caffeine from my diet, yes, that means no coffee or cola either. I have not had an alcoholic drink since February 2004. I also have been adding hair recipe tea drinks to my selection of beverages. Brings the fun back into drinking and staying sober at the same time. Horsetail tea, nettle tea, alfalfa tea, ginger tea, also mixed with green tea and some honey tends to work well. The honey is optional. I find I can drink a mixture of horsetail tea, ginger tea, and green tea easily without honey. I do need to put honey into my Greens+ mixed with fibre. I also have been drinking a glass of moringa powder in water and also drops of oil of oregano in powder too. When my moringa powder runs out, before I buy more, I am going to drink the moringa tea that my Mommy gave me as a gift a few years ago. When the moringa tea runs out, I’ll purchase both the powder and the tea of moringa.

With water, I add just a little bit of blackstrap molasses with water and a touch of apple cider vinegar in water each day and this could be the key to also keeping the doctor away :-). Medical doctor, I do mean. I am also starting to drink POM juice again, pomegranate juice which is currently on sale at Loblaws and it is better than wine! I also drink the Honey & Ginger lemonade that you can find at Loblaws.

I walk 31 minutes at least seven days a week. Praying to be 120 – let’s hear it for medical technology! I do not colour my hair, but I do have some gray hairs. I do not plan to colour my hair. I’m not in a rush, but I actually love gray hair even on women so I plan to embrace mine.

I cannot do makeup even 0.00001% as good, however, what I can do is help you to loc (dreadlocks) and to listen to your talk. I do other things, so I am not looking to get rich from this, however, if you would be interested in locing and/or dreadlocing your hair – basically what I would be doing is getting to the spots that you cannot reach for yourself – then please email at donnamagazinewordpress@gmail.com. I will under no circumstances deal with men’s hair or anyone who has been a man. Just a policy. Sorry. Women only. Thank you. Does not matter your culture, I will do it for you and I can find a public space in order to do it as long as you book far enough in advance. I would need about one week’s notice at the minimum.

It’s a big decision. One should think about it. It is not a decision to be rushed. I did not loc until 2012 – it took five years after I cut my hair in 2007 after basically a failed locing attempt. I have been loced now for five years as well, going on six, and this is actually my third attempt at locing that worked out.

Again, if interested, please contact donnamagazinewordpress.com. Please see my page on this site for my books and audiobooks for a list of the number of items I have related to the politics of hair.

As for my drinks which are cold in the summer, I will just heat them up for the winter.

Lately, I do drink cola, orange juice sometimes, and even root beer from A &W, plus lemonade sometimes, and iced green tea. I have not been tending to put any oils in my hair and just washing with castille soap without any conditioners and allowing my hair to air dry in all seasons of weather. I find this helps the thickness of my hair, yet, I still do use satin or silk-based hair accessories to put my hair in a ponytail or any other style that requires an updo, with the exception of just twisting it big and tucking it in. If I’m not running, it does not unravel.
