“Locs and Talk” – Offered at Kakonge Salon

If you are wondering, how could I possibly look different? Well, you do also. A wise and gentle homeopathic doctor told me not too long ago when I went to her to quit smoking cigarettes that the body renews its cells every three months. This is exactly why people who have been once been diagnosed with cancer can have a different diagnosis only months later there are not any cancer cells in the body. This is why people with mental illness can go decades without a remission. This is also why even people who have been diagnosed with diabetes can live to be 100+ years old. Yes, the homeopath is right and each of us is changing every single day, every single moment, every single second. All of us – regardless of age.

Most people’s dreadlocks are actually double the length if the hair was straightened. The reason that dreadlocks gain length slower is that the hair does not grow in a straight line. I tends to grow back and forth randomly so it takes more than 3″ of hair to increase the length of the dread 3″. The thicker the dreads, generally the slower they gain length. But, if your hair is not meant to be straight naturally, I would not recommend straightening it to receive the length. It can also damage the health of your hair.

I used Giovanni Direct Leave-in Conditioner and shampooed with Dr. Bronner’s peppermint shampoo, washed my skin with the citrus one, used Aveeno Intensive Care skin lotion after washing and that was it for about 10 years. Oh yes, I would also use during that time whatever conditioner I could find, but when I was in my 20s, I really loved Aveda products. Before I used the Rosemary Mint Aveda conditioner. The Aveda website also has a 20 percent discount going on recently for Canadian customers. The only reason why I do not use the Aveda conditioner anymore is that it is not recommended for locs. Instead, since my locs are mature, I use a selection of my oils in warmer weather and all of the oils in colder weather to deep condition my locs. My hair oils are featured on this site.

I also recently started pre-conditioning my hair before washes with mayonnaise since Somali, Eritrean and Ethiopian people have sworn by it and told me about it for years. You need to use the natural and/or organic mayonnaise that you can find in a health section of a grocery store or a health food store. The commercial mayonnaise has sugar, where the more organic one has just salt and not sugar. I also try to eat eggs at least three times a week. I have one loc in the back of my head that is past the middle of my back and I am rather tall. Recently, I have noticed about two locs in total that is into the middle of my back.

Loc care really is simple! It need not be complicated. I would say that the most important thing that I used to have for my locs is Dr. Bronner’s shampoo and my oils. Now, I have decided to use Dr. Bronner’s shampoo only if I am finding a lot of build-up in my hair, as well as for cleaning purposes around the home because it is actually an all-purpose shampoo which is why it could appear to be drying on more mature hair.

I keep the hair oils in and help to deep condition my locs with a heating cap when the weather is rather dry. Thank goodness Toronto is humid. I have come to appreciate it for its humidity.

The hair oils are a must for mature loced hair that is of African origin. I have recently started using Herbal Glo Shampoo for Thinning Hair, plus the compatible conditioner. So far, so good. I still pre-condition with the mayonnaise, the oils and put the Giovanni in right after I have shampooed. Sometimes I also use Maui Moisture Coconut as a pre-conditioner as well. Well, often, I do use Maui Moisture to pre-condition my hair. Giovanni leaves too many white marks in black coloured hair if you put it in when your hair is not wet. Continue reading
