By Hyacinth Harewood

I’m a parasite on an interminable past that will outlast my gourmet greed,
I’m Tantalus in consummation, never stopping eating – under the curse of my past.
Yesterday’s spices drive me to wishing wells of the future that never fulfill water,
Not a drip from the cup to the caking lip.

Come tomorrow ….
Tomorrow never comes,
Intercepted by an interfering today.

MANISH’S ZODIAC SIGNS PREDICTIONS ( 30th Jan – 5th Feb )

In Writing (all kinds) on January 30, 2017 at 3:00 AM

new_500

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April ) – You will have the willpower and initiative to succeed in whatever you do. You will be able to think on your feet and bluff through any difficulties. You should trust your instincts, let your intuition guide you. This period also heralds unexpected good news and represents self reliance and belief in your abilities. This could mean a job offer, promotion or business idea brought forward.  Change and travel are also indicated.  It can indicate the chance of a new money stream flowing to you or a gamble or risk paying off. But care must be taken to check that ‘get rich quick schemes’ don’t turn out to be ‘’get poor’’ quickly.  Favorable Date : Feb 2 Favorable Colors : White & Yellow

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May ) – You must be more confident with your traditional beliefs – no matter how much certain individuals will try to convince you otherwise. If you’re currently thinking about starting a new project, then use the skills that you already have and look into your past, as what has worked well before will work equally well now. If you feel as if you need advice, seek it from someone with whom you have no connection, as they’ll clear your mind of the negative thoughts implanted by people who want to trick you. Romance will likely be moving along wonderfully, though traditionally. The energies surrounding you now will work in your favour if you try to fulfil others’ expectations of you. Favorable Date : Feb 3 Favorable Colors : Blue & Yellow

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )  – Now is a time to take positive action to get what you want. The planning stage is over and you should take steps to put any plans into action to shape your future. Be determined to make your dreams a reality. Your focus should be in having faith in yourself and your abilities. Your talents are many and you should use them to the full. You will be making plans for your future, making fresh starts and putting your ideas into action. You simply need to build up your confidence in your own abilities to make things happen. This week can show someone is ready but reluctant to express their love for you. You may need to make the first move.   Favorable Date : Feb 5  Favorable Colors : Purple & Yellow Read the rest of this entry »

Protests at Site 52 are putting a severe strain on the financial ecosystem, damaging the habitats of taxpayers and politicians, says Comise County Warden Tom Gudgeon.

Blockades at the proposed dump site in Teeny Township are not only harming these species but the protestors as well, he added.

Charlene Rawston used to love garbage. Instead of keeping it in bins or in the garage, she kept the bags in the living room where she could talk to them and share stories. When Site 52 was first proposed she wholeheartedly supported it, happy that other bags like her close friends would finally have a proper home. But then the protestors came and everything changed.

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April ) – Positive career and creative energy is with you,. Creative projects are likely to reach a broad audience this week. There could be romantic trips or business trips that combine work with pleasure. Your higher mind is expanding, and you might be considering furthering your education or simply broadening your knowledge in a more informal manner. You are in the position to inspire others through what you create this week. Do your best to create something tangible out of your ideas. You are slightly more outspoken, daring, and progressive than usual now. Favorable Date : Jan 26 Favorable Colors ; Blue & Yellow

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May ) – You are receiving a cosmic push to become more active in your immediate environment (neighborhood, with siblings/relatives, etc.), and to learn and communicate facts that fuel your opinions. But you are also learning to expand your horizons, either through contact with people from an entirely different background than yours, travel, or higher learning. It is a time to put extra safeguards in place, to find what’s missing, to reduce the waste, look at what’s workable and to get to work. Also, make sure to put extra attention toward health and healthy choices. Favorable Date : Jan  23 Favorable Colors ; Red & Green

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June ) – Your ability to handle the details required to do a good job is significantly enhanced this week, and others are increasingly become more aware of your skills. Benefits may come through co-workers or employees during this cycle. Any type of service that you may provide is likely to go well. You are more successful in hiring people to work for you, if applicable, and improvements to your working environment are likely. A new job, schedule, study, or project can present challenge, but what it teaches or offers can be exceptionally valuable. Sherlock Holmes Show

In Writing (all kinds) on January 18, 2017 at 5:33 PM

By Saad Zafar

I was watching the British TV series “Sherlock Holmes” earlier. I’ve been watching a lot of it lately. And I started wondering what I would be learning like as a private detective. Well, before I can even contemplate what I would be like, I need to first determine whether I would even enjoy. And I have come to the conclusion that the answer to that is a resounding “no.”

I can imagine myself right in the middle of a case telling my assistant, “The hell with it. Let’s go grab a sandwich.” And I’m not even a big fan of sandwiches. What would really worry me (were I an actual private detective) would be the idea of reviewing pages and pages of evidence. Too tedious and boring. Can’t stand it.

And that’s why I would have made a horrible lawyer. I can imagine myself sitting in a courtroom refraining from registering even a single objection to anything being said by the opposing party. And I’d have no questions to ask of any witness when it would be turn to cross-examine him/her. Read the rest of this entry »

Time: 7:00 – 8:30pm

TIKI MERCURY CLARKE

Tiki Mercury-Clarke who history will record as one of the greatest Canadian jazz artists, is a multi-talented Canadian-born pianist, musicologist, vocalist, lyricist, composer and cultural historian. She has become a keeper of Afrikan ancestral wisdom, and, in harmony with tradition, a vessel for the often hard to find, authentic, African North American musical expression called jazz.

“Blackhurst” meets Harbourfront Centre with the performance of musicologist Tiki Mercury-Clarke. Toronto Black Then is a musical storytelling presentation about growing up in Toronto, Black-in-the-day. The presentation is a tribute to the resilience and courage of a (then) small Black community and their spirit of overcoming in an often open and hostile city.

Join us for this presentation. Admission is free and all are welcome.

SATURDAY, FEB. 11, 2017 – DENHAM JOLLY BOOK LAUNCH OF “IN THE BLACK” @ HARBOURFRONT

When: Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017

Time: 7:00 – 9:00pm

Where: Miss Lou’s Room, Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Denham Jolly arrived from Jamaica to attend university in the mid-1950s and worked as a high school teacher before going into the nursing and retirement-home business. Though he was ultimately successful in his business ventures, Jolly faced both overt and covert discrimination, which led him into social activism. The need for a stronger voice for the Black community fuelled Jolly’s 12-year battle to get a licence for a Black-owned radio station in Toronto. At its launch in 2001, Flow 93.5 became the model for urban music stations across the country, helping to launch the careers of artists like Drake.

Join as we launch, In the Black which traces B. Denham Jolly’s personal and professional struggle for a place in a country where Black Canadians have faced systematic discrimination. Jolly chronicles not only his own journey; he tells the story of a generation of activists who worked to reshape the country into a more open and just society. While celebrating these successes, In the Black also measures the distance Canada still has to travel before we reach our stated ideals of equality.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

ZODIAC SIGNS PREDICTIONS ( 9th JAN – 15TH JAN )

In Writing (all kinds) on January 9, 2017 at 3:00 AM

new_500

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )  –  You are creating your own sense of success or failure. If you want more than you have received – prove it and create a new path for yourself. Rewards are due, make your last minute adjustments to ensure profit. The tools for transformation are in your hands. You are responsible for your life, and your determination and stamina will keep your life and business fruitful. You’ve sown your seeds, now you can rest and see what begins to sprout from all of your effort. You shall reap what you have sown. Favorable Date : Jan 16 Favorable Colors : White & Yellow

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May ) :  A relationship or partnership is not fulfilling it’s potential. Turn to self for the love and sympathy that you are searching for. Look for the positive in what you are experiencing now. Love the one you are with. Release the negativity, so that new trust may be found. Holding on to what isn’t working anymore will not work. Detach from the unsolved issues and look for new inspiration. Creative problem-solving with sharp thinking will bring you a practical solution or insight to an ongoing problem. Hypothetical concepts and analyzation will allow you to strategize your proposal and game plan. Favorable Date : Jan 13 Favorable Colors : White & Red

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June ) – You will prefer to spend time in solitude. Fair warning to those in committed relationships: You will be prone to regress into old patterns of relating that you know are not productive. Avoid this if you possibly can or you will have apologies to make later. It is generally unwise to take initiatives for first two weeks even though your impulse calls you to rebel. Your intentions may be misunderstood or you may be dealing with deceptive people. Avoid pointing fingers at yourself or anyone else. It’s a challenge for you to see yourself into the future with accuracy at this time. Favorable Date : Jan 12 Favorable Colors : White & Blue Read the rest of this entry »

The Job Interview

In Writing (all kinds) on January 6, 2017 at 7:14 PM

By Saad Zafar

The other day, I went for a job interview. I arrived early so was told to wait. So I’m sitting there waiting. Just looking around, observing the people coming and going. There were a couple of other people waiting as well. And what I noticed was that people don’t wait like I do.

And what I mean by that is when people wait these days (for anything really), they reach into their pockets and take out their mobile devices. And then they proceed to just flick through them (probably doing nothing in particular). Now, I don’t do that. Anymore. There was a time that I used to do that.

Whenever I had nothing to do, I would just take my cellphone and just scroll through my newsfeed on social media. And when I was done doing that, I would do it again. And I ultimately came to the realization that it’s really an addiction. Read the rest of this entry »

Being a Muslim

In Writing (all kinds) on January 5, 2017 at 11:03 PM

By Saad Zafar

I’m a devout Muslim. And I do feel that having a belief in a higher power makes getting through tough times just a little bit easier. If you believe in an All-Powerful Being who is in complete control of every aspect of the Universe, then you realize that your entire life is planned to unfold in a way that is best for you.

Mind you, such an acknowledgement necessitates that the Supreme Being that you believe in is infinitely kind as well. And this belief makes you have less fear in life. And less regrets about the decisions you may have taken in your life. Less fear because you eventually reach an understanding that what is meant to hit you (in terms of joy or grief) will never miss you. And in the same way, what is meant to miss you will never hit you. It’s comforting.

And this naturally leads to one avoiding being consumed by regret because the outcomes of our decisions are not brought by us. And if one truly believes in a Supreme Being, then it follows that not only would He be the Most Kind but also the Most Wise. So if we look at our lives, we see that we get enjoy moments of bliss as well as endure times of sadness and pain. Read the rest of this entry »

Working Through Work

In Writing (all kinds) on January 5, 2017 at 9:00 PM

By Saad Zafar

It is quite an uncomfortable realization to learn that a significant number of one’s ex-colleagues thought of one as “difficult to work with” and “not a team player.” It hurts. It hurts a great deal especially when one has worked with those very same colleagues for years while under the impression that we’re all getting along fine.

What’s disturbing is when one finds this out after one’s gotten fired. Just the humiliation of it all. It wrecks your self-esteem and makes you wonder if there’s actually something wrong with you or whether it was just a case you simply not being the right fit for that company.

You see, when you really start pondering over it all, you start getting unhealthy thoughts that make you question whether you’re actually fit to work in any corporate environment. And it’s hard to remain level-headed under such circumstances because all your thoughts are coloured by the intense emotions that you’re experiencing. The same most interesting one (for me) being a sense of betrayal that I worked with dedication and loyalty for that organization for 5 years and this is the thanks I get.
