The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of the first seizure in Toronto of the drug carfentanil.

On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, the Drug Analysis Service Laboratories Regulatory Operations Branch of Health Canada confirmed the presence of carfentanil in recently submitted substances purported to be heroin, but tested positive for cocaine, caffeine and carfentanil.

Carfentanil is fatal in small doses and has a quantitative potency approximately 10,000 times that of morphine and 100 times that of fentanyl. It has been been associated to overdose deaths across Canada. Carfentanil is an opioid that is used to sedate large animals and is not for human consumption.

Carfentanil cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste.

Anyone coming across an unknown substance is asked not to handle it, but to contact police at 416-808-2222.

For further information on fentanyl, please refer to the Fentanyl Safety for First Responders website and the Face The Fentanyl website.
