Exciting news for youth this summer…
The Spotlighting and Promoting African Canadian Experiences (SPACE) Initiative, in the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and Its Diasporas at York University invites youth ages 14-18 (or grade 9 to grade 12) to participate in its seventh Student Summer Program, “An Introduction to African Diasporas.”
During fun and creative sessions, students will:
Explore historical and contemporary experiences of African descended persons.
Examine identity making amongst African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin American, Afro-Brazilian, African American, and African Canadian peoples.
Consider how the ideologies of race and gender function in different societies.
Learn about, participate in and make their own African inspired cultural productions.
Experienced educators, facilitators, volunteers and students from York University will deliver all of the sessions. We are certain students will come away from the program having made new friends, probed their imaginations and gained artistic skills. Most importantly, they will leave with greater knowledge about the contributions of African peoples and cultures to the historical development of the world.
The program will run daily, Monday to Friday, for two weeks, from July 4 to July 15, 2016 at York University, from 8:30 am — 3:30 pm. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Registration fees: $40.00
Spaces are limited. Deadline Extended! June 30/2016. Please return the attached application to afrolatinlibrary@gmail.com
