The Minister of Finance, in the 2016 Ontario Budget, announced an increase in the tobacco tax rates, effective 12:01 a.m., February 26, 2016.

New Tobacco Tax Rates

  • 15.475 cents per cigarette

This means that, as of February 26, 2016, tobacco tax on a carton of 200 cigarettes is increasing by $3.00, to $30.95.

Annual Increases

The Ontario tax rate on cigarettes and other tobacco products (except cigars) is increasing by an amount based on inflation, each year for five years, beginning on June 1, 2017.

Wholesalers

Wholesalers of tobacco products who are not collectors of tobacco tax are required to complete a Tobacco Products Inventory Report.

The ministry is emailing or faxing a Tobacco Products Inventory Report and instructions to wholesalers who are not collectors of tobacco tax. Wholesalers who do not receive a Tobacco Products Inventory Report and instructions on February 25, 2016 can call 1 866 668-8297 ext. 16042.
