A compassionate decision from Canada’s Supreme Court

In Writing (all kinds) on June 23, 2015 at 3:00 AM

MONTREAL, Feb. 6, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ – The AQDMD (Quebec association for the right to die with dignity) acknowledges the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in the Carter-Taylor case with much feeling and respect. The judges of the Supreme Court have noted changes in our society, evolving social mores and the desire of a sizeable majority – both in Canada and throughout the Western world – to be in control and exercise autonomy until the final moments of life.

We commend the Supreme Court’s wisdom in demarcating practices that have been commonly adopted, at any rate – more or less secretly – for a long time. These very reasonable parameters will help patients, families, caregivers and physicians reach the outcome of a complete therapeutic relationship, based on empathy, trust and respect for the other as a whole person, in complete dignity, unimpeded by their own beliefs. Size doesn’t matter – Canadian resilience does

In Writing (all kinds) on June 10, 2015 at 3:00 AM

TORONTO, Feb. 6, 2015 /CNW/ – Redbox is the latest U.S. corporate giant that likely hoped Canadian small business owners would be overwhelmed by their size and meekly cede our business to them. Like Movie Gallery (RIP) and the mighty Blockbuster Video (RIP) before them, Redbox was unprepared for the resilience of the locally owned and managed video store. Mom and pop stores created the video rental business in the early 1980s and 30 plus years later, Movie Experts is proud to work with business owners in every province, who continue to rent movies from almost 1,000 retail locations across the country. Liberal by-election win no cause for celebration: OPSEU

In Writing (all kinds) on June 9, 2015 at 3:00 AM

TORONTO, Feb. 6, 2015 /CNW/ – There is little to celebrate in the Liberal party’s Sudbury by-election victory yesterday, the president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union said today.

“The Liberals can put away their party hats and cork the champagne bottles,” said OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “Little has changed. They still have their majority at Queen’s Park and that means more in the way of severe austerity and cutbacks to the public services that the people of Sudbury and Ontario rely upon.

“I am proud of the role OPSEU played in this campaign,” he said. “We focused our message on the Liberals’ scheme to introduce more privatization of public services, all for the benefit of their friends in the privatization industry. In fact, the final results showed that about 60 per cent of Sudbury voters rejected the Liberals outright.” Read the rest of this entry »

However, he commended the B.C. government for listening to the concerns of resident hunters and modifying theWildlife Allocation Policy.

“Today’s amendments to the Wildlife Allocation Policy do not  go far enough in providing an equitable balance between the rights of B.C. resident hunters to access wild game and the business needs of guide-outfitters, who service foreign trophy hunters” said Wilson. “Nevertheless, the B.C Wildlife Federation remains committed to working with government on all levels in regards to wildlife issues.” Read the rest of this entry »
