Menopause a Hot Topic Among Canadian Women, with Symptoms Hitting Some as Early as 40 Years Old
Canadian companies get creative with new products to keep menopausal women comfortable
Toronto, Ontario – June 25, 2014 – With the number of Canadian women in their 40s and 50s hitting an all-time high, menopause is a current hot topic. In fact, studies show about two million Canadian women – and 25 million across North America – experience the discomfort of hot flashes and night sweats associated with menopause.
This reality has opened a new market of opportunity for Canadian businesses, which are coming up with creative solutions to this centuries-old problem as more Generation Xers edge towards middle-age.
“More women are experiencing menopause today than at any time in history, with some starting to have symptoms as early as 40 years old,” said Dr. Vivien Brown, a leading Toronto-based family physician and international speaker who specializes in women’s issues. Yet, despite an abundance of products for menopausal women introduced over the last few years – ranging from herbal remedies to sleepwear to hygiene items – there remains a significant unmet need for symptomatic women, she explained.
Barrie resident Patricia Copeland can vouch for that first-hand. She suffers from frequent hot flashes and night sweats related to menopause, but with a family history of heart disease, is not a candidate for hormone therapy commonly prescribed for these symptoms. “I needed something non-invasive and was looking for a natural solution, but nothing seemed to work for me,” she said. So, Copeland did something about it.
Working with her husband Steve, an industrial designer specializing in consumer products, the duo teamed up with design and medical experts to create a first-of-its-kind natural cooling device, called the Menopod™. After three years of research and development, the product officially launched this month under the company name Alexander Medical Inc.
The Menopod is a hand-held, rechargeable electronic device that resembles a wireless computer mouse, and is stored in a discreet compact case. Fitting comfortably into the palm of the hand, the Menopod features small copper plates that drop to 5°C (41° F) with a simple push of a button. When applied to the base of the neck, women experience fast relief from hot flashes or night sweats, Copeland explained.
“I have a sales background and need to travel a lot for work so I wanted something that is lightweight, easily fits into a hand bag, is discreet when sitting on a desk or night table, and is easily rechargeable, while being effective with no known side effects,” said Copeland, now CEO of Alexander Medical Inc. “The Menopod meets all of these criteria, and as we like to say at Alexander Medical, is quite simply the best way of Keeping Hot Women Cool.”
Dr. Brown agreed that there is a real need for a product like the Menopod. “We are always looking to the options of lifestyle modification as an early option, and the Menopod is an excellent choice for menopausal women, providing relief from hot flashes and improving their quality of life,” she said. The Menopod may be used alone, or in conjunction with other medications and alternative choices for women, she explained, adding that the device may have the potential to be used by a larger population of women, including those with breast cancer, migraines, fevers and other medical conditions.
Dr. Karen Snow, a Barrie-based Naturopath, agreed and pointed out that the Menopod can be used in conjunction with prescribed natural supplements or on its own. “The market is ready for an effective non invasive treatment,” she said. “The fast relief from the Menopod gives women confidence knowing they have a safe solution right in the palm of their hand.”
Both Dr. Snow and Dr. Brown also recommend committing to a healthy lifestyle that includes relaxation techniques, regular exercise and a balanced diet, as well as other strategies, to combat the effects of menopause. Dressing in light clothing or in layers may also help ease the stress of menopausal symptoms.
