Ontario Gains 35,300 Jobs in February

March 8, 2013

New Ontario Government Focused on Economic Growth and Job Creation

Employment in Ontario rose by 35,300 jobs, including an increase in youth employment of almost 21,000. In February, Ontario created nearly 70 per cent of all new jobs in Canada.

Job creation and economic growth are top priorities for the new Ontario government. Since the recessionary low of June 2009, full-time employment in Ontario has increased by 380,600 net jobs. And the province continues to outpace the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Great Lakes States in job creation.

The new Ontario government is committed to balancing the budget by 2017-18 in a way that is both fiscally responsible and fair, while creating jobs for the people of this province.

QUICK FACTS

  • The government has hosted three jobs roundtables across the province, working with businesses, entrepreneurs, and local leaders to generate more jobs and opportunity in Ontario communities.
  • The government is committed to working with the non-profit and private sectors to help youth, people with disabilities, new Canadians, and the unemployed find jobs.
  • Ontario has the second-largest ICT sector in North America, employing more than 270,000 people, and accounting for half the ICT workers in Canada.
  • Ontario’s life sciences sector is the second-largest in North America.
  • Toronto has the second-largest financial services centre in North America.

QUOTES

“The well-being of our families and communities is inextricably linked to a sustainable, growing economy. These gains demonstrate that Ontario is moving in the right direction, raising the confidence of investors, increasing innovation and productivity, and—most importantly—creating jobs for people across the province.”

UP Express On Track With New Station at Terminal 1

March 14, 2013

New Ontario Government Creating 1,200 Jobs

Construction is set to begin on the Union Pearson Express station at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, ensuring train service to and from Union Station in time for the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games.

Construction of a three-kilometre rail line that will connect the new station at Terminal 1 to the existing Kitchener GO Train corridor to Union Station is already underway.

Travel time between Union Station and Pearson International Airport will be about 25 minutes, with trains departing every 15 minutes and stopping at the Bloor and Weston GO Stations. Improvements are currently underway at Weston and Bloor GO stations to accommodate the express trains.

Investing in public transit is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to help reduce congestion, strengthen the economy and create jobs.

QUICK FACTS

  • The construction of the Union Pearson Express is creating and supporting more than 1,200 jobs.
  • More than five million people travel between downtown Toronto and Toronto Pearson International Airport each year, and that number is expected to reach nine million by 2020.
  • Metrolinx will own and operate the Union Pearson Express. Eighteen Tier 4 clean diesel vehicles have been purchased from Sumitomo Corporation of America. These vehicles are 75 per cent cleaner than standard diesel trains and will be convertible to electric propulsion.
  • Since 2003, Ontario has invested more than $16.1 billion in public transit in Ontario, including $7.7 billion in GO Transit.

LEARN MORE

QUOTES

“Construction is on track to build the Union Pearson Express in time for the 2015 Pan/ParaPan American Games. It will provide high-quality service that will transform the way we travel to and from the airport, removing an estimated 1.2 million car trips from Ontario roads in its first year of operation alone.”
— Glen Murray, Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Transportation
“The Union Pearson Express brings with it the promise of revitalization for York South-Weston, with a new Weston GO Station and Union Pearson Express stop, renewed local infrastructure and investment. I look forward to working with Minister Murray to continue this forward momentum and to realize the 2017 target date for electrification of this line.”
—  Laura Albanese, MPP, York South-Weston
“The Union Pearson Express is a key component of The Big Move — Metrolinx’s strategy for a modern, efficient and integrated transportation system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. It will provide a long-awaited express, high-quality rail service between Union Station in downtown Toronto and Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson International Airport.”
— Bruce McCuaig, president and CEO of Metrolinx

New Ontario Government Strengthening Economy and Building Fair Society

The new Ontario government hit the ground running with its plan to create jobs, strengthen the economy and build stronger communities and a fair society across Ontario.

Since being sworn in on February 11th, Premier Kathleen Wynne and members of her cabinet have visited communities across the province, met with important partners inside and outside government, and introduced a number of new initiatives and investments to get government working for the people of Ontario.

To help build a job-creation economy, Premier Wynne has held five jobs roundtables with private sector, labour, education and training partners across Ontario. Last month, Ontario created 35,300 jobs, including nearly 21,000 jobs for young people. In February, Ontario created nearly 70 per cent of all new jobs in Canada.

To help strengthen communities, the government held the first Northern cabinet meeting since 1995. It is also investing $100 million over five years to support world-leading brain research, which will improve health care. Ontario is also providing grants for community groups to clean up Great Lakes beaches or shoreline and restore wetlands.

To build a fairer society, the government introduced legislation that would, if passed, create three new categories of job-protected leave, so people can take care of their loved ones without fear of losing their job. Ontario also introduced legislation to help prevent skin cancer among young people by banning their use of tanning beds.

And as part of a commitment to an open, collaborative process, Premier Wynne met with both leaders of opposition parties as her government prepares the budget. The government’s House Leader worked with opposition members to broaden the mandate of the Legislature’s Justice Committee, which is looking into the relocation of two gas plants. And the government is also participating in ongoing discussions with partners in the education sector, which have already resulted in the return of extracurricular activities in some Ontario high schools.

Helping to create jobs, while investing in quality of life, is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to build a fair society and a strong economy.

QUICK FACTS

  • Ontario employment has increased by 415,500 net new jobs since the economic low in June 2009 with full-time employment up 380,600 and part-time employment up 34,900.
  • The government has hosted jobs roundtables in Toronto, Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor and London, sitting down with community leaders and representatives of the private sector, education, non-profit and labour partners.
  • Premier Wynne has had meetings with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell of Grenada, Premier Alison Redford, Premier Robert Ghiz, U.S. Ambassador David Jacobson and will be meeting with French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault on Thursday.
  • In February, the Provincial Council of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation voted to recommend to members to suspend their political action related to extracurricular and voluntary activities.
  • The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer reports that the risk of skin cancer — particularly melanoma — increases by 75 per cent when tanning beds are used prior to the age of 35.

Statement by Minister Broten on International Women’s Day

March 8, 2013

Today, Laurel Broten, Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, released the following statement in recognition of International Women’s Day:

“Today is International Women’s Day. This is a time to celebrate the achievements – and the leadership – of women here in Ontario and around the world.

In Ontario, we are marking two important milestones for women this year – the 30th anniversary of the Ontario Women’s Directorate and Ontario’s first female premier. Both speak to the continual evolution in the role of women in Ontario society.

As Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, I met with the female consuls general from around the world yesterday to talk about what we can learn from each other in the global effort to end violence against women. And today, I have the honour of celebrating women’s achievements with the Federation of Muslim Women and OASIS Centre des Femmes.

This year, the United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day is ‘A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.’ This is a promise I intend to keep.

When we all work together as women and men, we create a safe and fair society and build strong communities, full of opportunity for women in Ontario and around the world.”

Ontario Supports Aerospace Industry

March 7, 2013

The New Ontario Government Helping Create 50 Jobs in Mississauga

The new Ontario government is helping Sumitomo Precision Products create 50 jobs at its new production facility for aerospace landing gear in Mississauga.

The company will undertake final assembly for aircraft landing gear and landing gear control systems.  The Mississauga facility will become the Japanese company’s global headquarters for its aerospace division.  Sumitomo already sources about a third of its landing gear components from Ontario suppliers, and this will grow with the new facility.

The new Ontario government is working to build a stronger province by creating good jobs, a strong, vibrant economy and a fair society.

QUICK FACTS

  • Ontario is providing a $3.25 million loan in support of the final assembly project, which has a total value of $10 million; this is part of an overall investment by Sumitomo of over $50 million in its new Mississauga facility.
  • Ontario’s aerospace industry employs approximately 22,000 people and manufactures about 60 per cent of the world’s large commercial landing gear and about 40 per cent of all commercial landing gear.
  • Since October 2003, Ontario employment has increased by 589,800 net jobs, 66.6 per cent of which were full-time.
  • Ontario has cut taxes on business investment in half, making the province more competitive and encouraging new business growth.

LEARN MORE

QUOTES

“With support from our government, Sumitomo’s investment will further strengthen our province’s aerospace sector and create direct and spin-off jobs right here in Ontario. The new Ontario government will continue our proactive approach to attracting investment that creates jobs and strengthens our economy.”
— Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment
“Western Mississauga and its Lisgar, Meadowvale, and Streetsville neighbourhoods welcome more aerospace investment. We are a community that can earn high-value jobs and tomorrow’s companies because we have a hard-working, high-skills workforce. Sumitomo is in good company, and we welcome them.”
— Bob Delaney, MPP for Mississauga-Streetsville
“Our new Mississauga facility is ideally located at the heart of Ontario’s concentration of landing gear expertise. From this base, Sumitomo looks forward to offering an expanded suite of products and services to our North American aerospace customers.”
— Shinichi Nakamura, President, Sumitomo Precision Products (SPP) Canada Aircraft, Inc.

Romance or Dating Scam

In 2011, Romance scams emerged as highest grossing scam, with over 12 million in losses reported by Canadians. This scam has also lead to incidents of suicide in cases where victims have lost their life saving and have been emotionally destroyed.

• Romance scams will continue to have a profound impact on Canadians and cause severe financial loss in 2013.

• These scams have proliferated with the increase use of social media – social networking sites and dating sites. These sites are most common with scams that require a level of trust between the victim and the fraudster.

• In the Romance scam the fraudsters have demonstrated that they are willing to develop the relationship over extended periods of time. This increases the trust level between the victim and fraudster and will result in higher dollar losses. This also results in a negative social impact on the victim as they have developed emotional and psychological attachment to the fraudster.

• Generally, Romance scams involve the victim and the fraudster meeting through a social networking site. The fraudster will gain the trust of the victim through displays of affection. While the fraudster is usually located in a distant country, eventually wanting to meet the victim in person. It is at this time the fraudster will advise they can’t afford to travel and will seek assistance from the victim in covering travel cost. Other variations include the fraudster presenting situations of emergency/ urgency, such as a sick family member, and seeking financial assistance from the victim for various costs.

• Some incidents have also occurred at the local level and involved the victims actually meeting the suspects to go out on dates and meeting at the victim residence. These cases are creating concerns for personal safety. For example, in one incident the victim reported having her wallet and some jewellery stolen from home.

Indicators

• Distressed citizen worried about a loved one
• Talking about good friend or loved one in another country that is coming to visit or needs help.
• Mentions Western Union or MoneyGram
• Frequenting the bank more often
• Making unusual withdrawals both in amounts and frequency.
• Making multiple withdrawals ranging from $500‐ $3000 in Cash.
• Making large dollar wire transfers to countries in Africa, Asia or Eastern Europe

Scam Alert

The Toronto Police would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a nationwide Secret Shopper Scam.  It is alleged that unsuspecting victims are being recruited for gainful employment as secret shoppers.

Once hired, the victim is sent cheques to cash using their own bank account.  The victim is then instructed to use a portion of this money to shop at various businesses and grade the service they received at those businesses.

One of the final instructions given to the victim is to use and grade the services of a cheque cashing business.  They are given a name and destination by the employer and told to send money, by wire transfer to this destination.  The money to be sent is a large percentage of the money they’d obtained earlier by cashing the cheques.

The victi m would later learn the cheques initially deposited into their accounts, were fraudulent.

Fraud Alert

The Toronto Strategic Partnership* would like to make the public aware of a “phishing scam” targeting credit card holders.

“Phishing” is a technique used to trick people into providing personal, financial, or password data by leading consumers to believe that a request for information is coming from a legitimate source. In reality, it is a malicious attempt to collect consumer information for the purpose of committing fraud. These requests often ask for information that will be used to commit fraud.

People are being contacted through email, text messaging and phone calls from suspects attempting to get personal credit card details such as credit card numbers, PINs, and the three digit code (CVV2/CVC2) on the back of a credit card.

The Toronto Strategic Partnership recom mends the following steps to protect your credit card data:

− do not provide any personal or credit card information

− ask the caller to provide his/her name, department, and extension

− tell the representative you want to verify their information and end the call

− never use verification provided by the person/entity that contacts you

− take steps to verify what is being told to you by calling the phone number on your credit card or billing statement

− contact your local police to report the incident or the Canadian Anti−fraud Centre for more information on this and other similar scams.

“Scareware” scam warning

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has been receiving reports from Canadians who say their computers are being frozen or they have been “locked out” of their computers after receiving pop-up messages warning them their computer has been associated with child pornography. These warning messages, which claim to be from the RCMP or CSIS, tells the recipient to pay $100 dollars via Ukash so their computer can be “unlocked”.

These types of messages, commonly known as scareware, are designed to create such shock and anxiety that victims respond by sending money quickly.

If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that it is a scam – these messages are not being issued by th e RCMP. Last November, Ukash posted an alert on their website about a similar scam targeting residents in the United Kingdom. If you’ve been “locked out” of your computer, it’s an indicator that your system may have been infected with malware and you will need to take steps to address the problem.

Tips to protect yourself

• Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has a virus
• Update your anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly
• Don’t click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to you by someone you don’t know
• Turn on your browser’s pop-up blocking feature
• Never download anti-virus software from a pop-up or link sent to you in an e-mail
If you’ve received a scareware message, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501) to report it.
