TORONTO, ON (January 7, 2013) – Want to know what colours are in for 2013? Think heart-warming, joyful and soothing, and you’ll be right on trend.

Leading Canadian paint brand CIL® has unveiled its paint palette for 2013 and “it’s all about joyous and uplifting colours,” said Alison Goldman, brand manager for AkzoNobel, makers of CIL paint.

From candy reds, papaya oranges and light mustard yellows, to spruce greens, deep blues and saturated neutrals, the hottest hues for the coming year are vibrant brights, dusty pastels and fluro-infused neutrals.

“These are colours that can be easily incorporated into any room in the home,” Goldman said. “Painted on one wall or all four, the 2013 colours are full of life and work wonders in lifting spirits and calming the soul.”

Crediting the trend to today’s demanding, fast-paced and connected way of life, she explained that “as a result of technology, people today are more comfortable with vibrant colours than ever before, but still need a break from time to time and are looking for a quiet, calming retreat where they can gather their thoughts.”

Here’s where the trend is moving in each colour family:

Reds: Last year’s hottest shade, red has moved from fruity and tropical to warm pink, like the colour of roses or calendar girl lipstick. Deep watermelon, blackberry, candy brights and red-infused neutrals are also in vogue. For a fresh look, try the new reds with jade, buttery yellow and pale mint, or deep burgundy for a tone-on-tone effect. CIL’s top red pick for the year is Magnificence (90RR 21/418).

CIL Paint Magnificence: Rose-coloured Magnificence (90RR 21/418), featured on the wall of this sitting area, is CIL’s top red pick for 2013.

Oranges: Oranges for the coming year are vibrant and peppy, with a modern feel. Darker shades are more chocolate than coffee and lighter colours more coral, moving into hot peach. Warmed up with lively pinks and reds, or cooled down with warm grey, oranges of 2013 – including CIL’s African Tulip (30YR 25/463) – work well on an accent wall.

Yellows: Popular yellows for 2013 range from olive-tinted mustard to putty-like yellows injected with lime and grey. Lemon drop and warm buttery shades are also making a comeback. Pairing well with mauve, magenta and peacock blue, these soft yellows, like CIL’s Sapling (50YY 51/519), bring out the best of stone and tile floors.

Greens: Cooler and greyed-off shades of green, such as CIL’s Still Waters (90GG 28/133), are replacing the olive, apple and grass greens that were all the rage last year. The colour of deep spruces, the new greens are almost blue, and darker and softer than the past. Emitting a sophisticated yet laid back feel, they work well in both a country and modern decor.

Blues: Purple-blue is the “it” colour for the coming year – a dark blue with a tinge of purple. It’s modern, but calming and works well with most colours. Other popular blues for 2013 range from wintery sky blue and greyish denim to deep velvety teal and bright cyan, including CIL’s Street Lamp Black (70BB 07/103).

Violets: Violets are becoming deeper, almost blackberry, at one end of the spectrum and dustier, floral and more pastel-like on the other. Combine dark violets, like CIL’s Roseroot (70RR 16/116), with yellow or pale pink for a striking touch in a bedroom, or use the year’s newest lilacs and rose taupes for a softer, more mysterious look.

Neutrals: Rounding out the 2013 colour palette are warmer, sandy neutrals like CIL’s Fog Grey (50RR 32/029), which are creamier and richer than last year’s popular light taupe. Cool, light neutrals, such as CIL’s Universal Grey (00NN 62/000), a silver, feathery grey, will also be in style.

“Every colour family has both dynamic and subdued choices to match any taste, and each choice can easily and quickly update any room,” said Goldman. “The important thing is not to be afraid and to give colour a try – after all, it’s not a permanent decision, it’s only paint.”
