Additional information on wholesale high-speed access services

In the late 1990s, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission (CRTC) decided that it would not intervene in Internet
services. There was enough competition to give Canadians choice. Internet
service providers set the rates paid by consumers, as well as other terms
and conditions, without having to obtain the CRTC’s approval. Read the rest of this entry »

41 Division – Crime Prevention

In recent weeks there has been an increase in the number of theft of wallets and purses from grocery stores in 41 Division.  By following the suggestions below – you can redue your risk and help stamp out purse snatching.

  • Do not leave your purse or wallet unattended in the grocery cart – even for a second
  • Do not carry a large amount of cash in your wallet
  • Be aware of your surroundings and watch for someone trying to distract you
  • Keep you purse on you at all times and possibly use a small wallet to hold your cash, redit cards and debit card in your front pocket
  • Ensure that your purse is always zipped up and closed
  • Do not leave your purse hanging from walkers, restaurant chairs, always keep them on your person
  • Use a fanny pack or waist pouch instead of a purse
  • do not place a purse strap around your neck or wrist; forcible removal could cause serious personal injury

If you have any further questions please contact PC Jill Davey #3965 or PC Susan Mundy #1137, 41 Division Crime Prevention Officers at 416 808 4127 or email at jill.davey@torontopolice.on.ca or susan.mundy@torontopolice.on.ca

14 Division – Home Security Tips

Most thieves look to steal small, expensive easy to carry & conceal items – cash, wallets, purses, credit cards, identification, jewellery and electronic equipment. Remember to take steps to safe guard these items. Don’t give a thief a free opportunity, remember to lock your doors and windows.
• Make sure all doors, windows and skylights to your house and garage are always closed and locked.
• Park your vehicle in a locked garage if possible.
• Keep your vehicle locked at all times.
• Use your exterior lighting. Regularly check to ensure all exterior lighting around your home is powered and operational.
• Install exterior lighting around the complete perimeter of your home if you don’t already have it.
• If you hav e a back alley or easement, be sure no unauthorized person can get into this area.
• Beware of landscaping that may provide cover or concealment for someone lurking around your home.
• Trim back trees and bushes on your property. Make use of hostile plants with thorns to keep out unwanted people.
• Ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your home with the promise you’ll do the same for them. Concentrate on houses where people are away on vacation.
• Be aware of your surroundings and what is going on in your neighbourhood.
• Report any suspicious person(s) or events to the police.

People going away should take extra steps to help ensure home security. Put lights on timers, make arrangements to cancel newspaper delivery, have door to door flyers picked up and have someone check your home regularly. Never leave notes or recorded messages which let people know you are not home.

You should report suspicious people or events to the police at once.

Contact numbers:
9-1-1 Should be used for the following emergencies:
•Crime in progress – situations where the safety of people or property are at risk

Canadian vehicle companies often rely on single models for bulk of sales‏

Canadian vehicle companies often rely on single models for bulk of sales

Platform sharing, flexible manufacturing and brand narrowcasting allow vehicle manufacturers to target ever-narrowing consumer niches with highly differentiated product offerings, but bread-and-butter models still account for majority shares of their parent OEMs’ sales.

Despite these trends, many manufacturers – including full-line automakers such as Ford and Toyota – remain heavily invested in individual model nameplates. The F-Series and Corolla, for example, accounted for 39.4 percent and 23.9 percent (respectively) of total Ford and Toyota light vehicle sales in 2012. This, despite the fact that these brands each fielded vehicle lines numbering in the double digits.

client release_Page_1_Page_1

It is important to note that this analysis contains certain data anomalies due to the way in which vehicle brands report sales. For instance, while Fiat only fields a single model at present (500), variants of that car (i.e., convertible, Abarth) are reported as separate models. This practice contrasts with those of manufacturers like BMW or Ford, which report all 3-Series and F-Series variants under single respective banners. We have chosen to adhere to each company’s preferred model breakdown.

Of special interest is the degree to which many manufacturers rely on C-size vehicles. Mazda (Mazda3 @ 54.9%), Honda (Civic @ 49.4%) and Volkswagen (Jetta @ 45.5%) derive the lion’s share of their brand volumes from single compact models. Hyundai (Elantra @37.4%), Toyota (Corolla @ 23.9%), Nissan (Rogue @ 19.3%) and Kia (Forte @ 19.1%) all possess strengths in B and D-size segments, yet all achieve disproportionate success with their C-size product. Likewise, luxury brands like Lincoln (MKX @ 61.8%), Porsche (Cayenne @ 54.2%), Lexus (RX @ 47.2%) and Cadillac (SRX @ 46.7%) are notably dependent on D-size crossovers to drive volume and profits.

District of Columbia City Council Honors SisterMentors!

SisterMentors Receives Recognition Resolution of 2013
Councilmember Recognizes Organization for 15 Years of Service to the District of Columbia and Beyond

Washington, D.C. – January 8, 2013 – A local non-profit program, SisterMentors, received a Ceremonial Resolution from the Council of the District of Columbia to honor the organization’s 15 years of service, and dedication to expanding access to educational opportunities for women and girls of color in the community. The resolution, cited as “SisterMentors Recognition Resolution of 2013,” will take effect upon today in the District of Columbia Register.

“It is no secret that an educational achievement gap exists in this country, and [programs] like SisterMentors are essential in the fight to erase it,” said Councilmember Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3). “By supporting and mentoring young women as they matriculate through college and graduate school, SisterMentors is providing an invaluable service to our community, and the city is grateful to them for all of their work.”

In 1997, SisterMentors was originally comprised of a group of highly motivated women of color of different races, ethnicities and backgrounds who came together to help each other complete their dissertations and earn their doctoral degrees. However, in 2001, the program expanded its efforts by mentoring young girls in elementary, middle, and high school to help reduce the high drop-out rates in the Washington, D.C. area.

“We are appreciative of the support of the Council of the District of Columbia and Councilmember Cheh and we are honored to receive this recognition from the city we love and are committed to serving,” said Dr. Shireen Lewis, Founder of SisterMentors. “Higher education for women of color is our passion and we are looking forward to guiding more young women to achieve their highest potential.”

Since its founding, SisterMentors has helped 19 young women of color get accepted to and attend college, including Duke University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Additionally, the program has helped 42 women of color earn doctoral degrees in many disciplines, including in math, science and economics from an array of universities, including American University and Howard University. Some of the women are now tenured faculty at universities, including at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

SisterMentors is a project of EduSeed, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. that promotes education among historically disadvantaged and underserved communities, particularly women and people of color.
