Statement from the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services – National Peacekeepers’ Day
August 9, 2013
Today, Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, released the following statement:
“As we observe National Peacekeepers’ Day, I take great pride in paying tribute to the province’s community safety professionals who are serving and have served in international peacekeeping missions.
Aug. 9 is recognized annually as National Peacekeepers’ Day. The date was chosen in honour of nine Canadian peacekeepers who died on this day in 1974 when three missiles downed their aircraft over Syria.
Since peacekeeping missions began in 1956, hundreds of officers from the Ontario Provincial Police, municipal police services and correctional services have worked alongside military peacekeepers around the world, maintaining safety and stability in troubled regions. Their guidance, dedication and professionalism help restore peace following conflict.
National Peacekeepers’ Day is a time to express our thanks to these Ontarians. We are proud of their contribution in making the world a safer place.”
